Lily Mae Martin is an Australian visual artist currently based in Brunswick. Her work is very eclectic, drawing it’s inspiration from everything from contemporary comics and cartooning, through to pre-renaissance fine art. She predominately works in the mediums of ink, pencil, and oil paint. Her portraiture is very technically refined, yet her subject matter is often stark and unsettling. Similarly her cartoon characters, although playfully drawn, are revealing of the daily difficulties of life and social interaction. Her self titled exhibition contains a retrospective of portraits from 2008 - 2009 and explores the tension of personal relationships between families, friends and partners. This will be Lily's last show in Australia before moving to Europe with only a few clothes, a small folio, some paints and her best friend.
